In 2013, I stood in front of the opportunity of a lifetime
I was running an affiliate offer for smartphone software and it was clear that if we were going to go from making $20,000/month to over $100,000+, the fastest way to do it was to stop being an affiliate. We needed to stop selling other people’s products and only getting a fraction of the ticket price to running our own offer and getting 100% of the ticket price.
The only problem was that there wasn’t any information on how to do this. There were plenty of gurus who could teach us how to identify a niche and increase the amount of traffic we were getting to our site. They could also teach us how to increase the amount of people clicking through our offer and buying on the other side. But no one could teach us the basic fundamentals of building and scaling a team for our digital business.
- We knew we could find staff on Upwork, but no one could teach us how to sift through the thousands of applicants we got for every VA position and find the right person without wasting hundreds of hours, both in searching and in training the wrong person.
- We knew we needed to provide training and processes for our newly acquired team members, but no one could teach us how to create training and processes that ensured we get the same high-quality results we wanted without having to stand by and watch our team members like a hawk.
- We knew we needed to develop tracking and reporting systems that allowed us to gain insights into how the business was running and how we could improve our processes, but no one could help us create these systems and discover our bottlenecks and optimise our business.
So, we got set working it out ourselves. We spent tens of thousands of dollars failing to get the right team members until we worked out how to do it properly. We tried and tested variant after variant of our training programs and processes until we discovered what differentiated the good from the bad and were able to consistently produce high-level staff. We refined and refined our tracking and reporting templates until we were able to gain in-depth insights into our business performance with only a quick glance at key metrics.
This allowed us to grow from two guys in their home offices separated by half a world to 14 staff and $100,000+ revenue/month in 6 months.
What I didn’t realise at the time, and what only became clear to me once I’d spent the last 12 months working on this, was that I’d actually spent the last 10 years developing training processes and systems. I’d been running a life coaching company that had been training people on how to transform their thought and behaviour patterns and that was what allowed me to develop these systems and processes so naturally and simply.
When a particularly disruptive Google update ended that business in 2014, I started a new online venture in October that year and started applying these newly discovered principles all over again. We continued to refine these foundations further and further and as we grew that business.
While safer business practices meant our revenue growth was slower than my first business, we still scaled to $50,000+/month and 16 staff within the first 9 months and had done over $100,000/month and had 30 employees, including 2 layers of management, at the time we were acquired.
But the best thing about this business, and one of the reasons it was acquired, was that our structures and processes allowed the company to run without any input from the founders. In fact, it was so finely tuned that it grew by 20% in the month I took off to look after my first child.
This is where I discovered the secrets to growing and scaling a digital business, and this is what I can help you do.
